The Reservoir Cleaned Using a HID Dismountable Cutter Suction Dredger

21-09-2023

The reservoir was heavily silted up over the years, The water storage capacity behind the dam had been diminished through siltation. The reservoir needed to be deepened to -13 m below the surface, removing both silt and alluvial gravel. A Cutter Suction Dredger, type CSD4016, was brought in for the job by the contractor.

The dredging activities were carried out by the Dredging Company. They brought in their CSD4016, a modular dredger, transported to the site by trucks. The dredger was assembled at the job site.

The cutter dredger has a normal max dredging depth of -13m, The dredger has an assembled overall length of 40m and a limited draught of under 1.3m. It is fitted out with a wear-resistant dredge pump, pumping some 2200m3 of mixture per hour, powered by a Wheichai diesel engine. The CSD4016 is fitted out with a hydraulically powered cutter unit. This mechanical cutting device was required as the top layer of the sediments was a consolidated layer of alluvial gravel.

This material including sand, mud, and gravel under water was broken up and pumped out by the cutter suction dredger CSD4016. The further layers of fine sediments, such as silt, were removed to a depth of -13m using a submersible dredge pump.

The reservoirs – for fresh water supply, for irrigation of crops, for hydropower, or as emergency storage facilities – gradually fill up with sedimentation with flooding and rivers moving, To ensure that the main functionality of these reservoirs is not affected, they will require dredging in due time. And that is where the cutter suction dredger comes in handy.
